WHISTLE STOP

The film "Fried Green Tomatoes" was shot in two principal locations, Juliette, Georgia, site of the Whistle Stop Cafe, and Senoia, Georgia, the location of the actual house that was used as the Threadgoode family home. Both the cafe and the Threadgoode home can be seen by interested travelers. The Whistle Stop Cafe is open for business, with each summer bringing in buses full of tourists for lunch.

The visitor to Juliette will be surprised at how small the town is. It is a one-street town, and it is much smaller in reality than it appears on the screen. The old grain mill, visible in the background in some scenes of the movie, is still standing as well. A short walk across the tracks brings the visitor to the dam and spillway, which was fenced off because a few people actually tried to wade across. People in Juliette are friendly and helpful to the tourist. Juliette is so small everyone knows the names of the other residents' pets, such as a rambunctious black dog that two men informed me was named "Chief."

When in Senoia, stop in at the local library for directions to the Threadgoode house. The librarian, Mrs. Alice Jones, will be happy to tell you where the house is located, and you can't miss it. Mrs. Jones is used to having movie people around. There is a film studio in Senoia, Riverwood Studios, and Mrs. Jones has let out books to such actresses as Piper Laurie and Patty Duke, in Senoia to film a Christmas movie for Lifetime Television.

If you enjoyed the film, the next time you are in Georgia try to make it to the Whistle Stop Cafe for lunch, but you better make reservations in advance!
